Concert December 4, 2022

The musicians of the Lake Oswego Millennium Concert Band are excited to present their first concert of the 2022-2023 season on Sunday evening, December 4, at 7:30 pm in the Lakeridge High School Auditorium. As usual, there is no admission charge. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the Millennium Clarinets providing pre-concert music in the lobby.

The title of this concert is Fall Classics! Classics refers to both the selections of classic concert band repertoire on the program as well as the number of classic familiar tunes that are given fresh and contemporary treatments by new composers.

Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F for Military Band is a classic concert band composition based on old English folk tunes.  Morton Gould’s American Salute, another classic, is a fantasy on the Civil War tune “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.” American Hymnsong Suite is a contemporary treatment of four classic hymn tunes.  Classic tunes reimagined.

Highlighting the second half is another classic of concert band literature, Danzon no. 2 by Arturo Marquez. A Danzon is a dance style rooted in Cuba with Spanish, British, and French influences, and this fiery, passionate arrangement reflects that.

Rounding out the concert are a beautiful contemporary ballad set to Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening,” Samuel Barber’s Commando March, music from  The Lion King, a celebration called Exultate, and a little holiday offering of a jazzy version of The Holly and the Ivy.

There will be something for everyone and every musical taste.  Come early to listen to the pre-concert music and visit the artists in the lobby. Doors open at 6:30PM.
