Concert May 6, 2018

The 74 musicians in the Lake Oswego Millennium Concert Band invite you to attend our upcoming concert in the auditorium at Lakeridge High School on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 7:30 pm. Keeping with our tradition, this concert will offer a great variety of different musical styles for your enjoyment and we are well prepared to perform up to the standard of excellence you have grown to expect. We hope you will come early to visit with our local artists who will be showing their work while the Millennium Winds will serenade you with pre-concert music in the lobby beginning at 6:45. We are calling this concert Symphonic Episodes and, of course, there is no charge for admission. We will also have the pleasure of introducing our scholarship winners for 2018 from Lake Oswego and Lakeridge High Schools.

At this concert, you will hear the following music. Our opening selection is a piece called Monument, which was written by Robert W. Smith to evoke images of Colorado’s spectacular state parks. As always, we will perform two rousing marches, the Purple Pageant by Karl King and The Yorktown Centennial by John Philip Sousa. Our own Jeff Binns will once again thrill and dazzle you with his musical virtuosity while performing one of the great Euphonium solos, Czardas. Brian Balmages, a current composer whose music has been widely performed by major symphonies and concert bands around the world, is the composer of our signature piece for this concert. This outstanding composition of his, Symphonic Episodes, is a delightful three-movement piece written for concert band that is melodic, rhythmic, technically difficult, fun to play and, hopefully, will be enjoyable for you to hear. We have brought back one of our band members’ all-time favorites, Silverado, for this concert. It is the music from the movie of the same name and brings back good memories for our band members as it was enthusiastically appreciated by the audience when we performed it for the National Convention of Concert Bands in San Ramon CA in 2013. One of the things our band has done in the past is to give opportunities for younger band directors that perform in our band the opportunity to rehearse and direct our band for a performance. Our guest conductor for this concert is Ryan Lewis, who plays trumpet in our band and is a first-year music teacher in Willamina this year. Ryan has done a remarkable job in preparing a wonderful band piece called Pilatus, Mountain of Dragons for this concert. We know you will also enjoy Bali Ha’i, Oklahoma, Getting To Know You, The Carousel Waltz and Climb Every Mountain from a collection of Broadway Musicals written by Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers called the Golden Age of Broadway. Our encore, Bill Bailey is always a favorite and will send everyone home happy.

Please join us Sunday evening May 6, 2018 in the Lakeridge High School Auditorium. The concert starts at 7:30 pm, but come early to browse the artwork and listen to the music of the Millennium Winds in the lobby prior to the concert. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Please introduce a friend or two to our music by bringing them along to the concert.
